Royal Harbour of Ramsgate: 200 years since the Royal Decree was signed

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Royal Harbour of Ramsgate: 200 years since the Royal Decree was signed

05 November 2021

Following the Royal Harbour 200 Festival in September, which was the Anniversary of HM King George IV’s first visit. We are now celebrating the actual date of the Royal Charter, November 27, 1821. The letter below, signed by Lord Sidmouth confirms our unique honour.
The letter reads:

Whitehall, November 27, 1821

Sir,

I am commanded by the King to signify to you His Majesty’s Pleasure that in consideration of the zeal and loyalty so eminently displayed by the inhabitants of Ramsgate, when His Majesty lately embarked and disembarked at the Port, the Harbour of Ramsgate be hence denominated a Royal Harbour. And that The Royal Standard should be hoisted there on the appointed for celebration of His Majesty’s Birthday, and on the Anniversary of His Majesty’s Accession & Coronation.

I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your most obedient humble servant
Sidmouth
Sir William Curtis, Bart,
Chairman of the Trustees for the Improvement of Ramsgate Harbour

This means that as from November 27, 2021, it really is now 200 years since this great honour was bestowed on the town. Perhaps it is now time to get the funding in place in order to erect Dominic Grant’s amazing bronze work of art and place it by the Royal Harbour.

We have already paid for all the clay to create his masterpiece. We have paid for the casting of the statue which has cost £7,000 and have 27 pieces ready to be cast in bronze, but we do need to raise a further £50,000 to complete the task. So, if you would like to be part of this amazing project to place the 13-foot work of art on the UK’s only Royal Harbour, you can donate or organise a fundraising event to help the cause. We know we have a Royal Harbour, but the statue will tell the world of our great honour.

It is hoped that we can raise the funds in readiness for an unveiling of the completed work by mid-summer 2022, possibly on August 12, 2022, which is one of the three Royal Standard flying dates.
