St Laurence Church appeal for details of First World War Heroes

As the centenary of the start of the First World War approaches, St Laurence Church, in St Lawrence, Ramsgate, is researching the servicemen from the village who died in the conflict whose names are remembered on the war memorial.

Barbara Byne, from the church, said: "We would be grateful for any information from anyone who knows their grandfather, or great-grandfather was involved. Details of their lives, with photographs would be much appreciated."

The village was much involved in the First World War.

Mrs Byne said: "Nethercourt and Southwood House were used as military hospitals during the war. This, of course, caused the break-up of the last estates as no-one could afford the repair or indeed to run these estates."

"Nethercourt park is a small remnant of the Nethercourt Estate. Southwood became a housing estate in its entirety, except for the football ground, which has a covenant, thanks to the Weigall family's foresight."

The church hopes to display information during its open days next summer.
