Remembrance in Ramsgate

On Saturday November 11, Armistice Day, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the ‘Destiny’ memorial in Albion Gardens at 8:30am.

When the ‘Destiny’ memorial was unveiled in 1920 it was to commemorate all those who had contributed to the First World War (rather than only remembering those who had died). This included the contribution of animals. The memorial is therefore an interesting example of the diversity of who and what war memorials can commemorate – often, people tend to assume memorials remember only those in the armed forces who died, and this memorial reminds us that wider contributions to the war effort can and should also be remembered.

There will also be a ceremony in the Town Centre and at the Ramsgate Cemetery at 10:50am, followed by two minutes silence at 11am.

On Sunday November 12, Remembrance Sunday, the Remembrance Parade will set off from Elms Avenue at 10:40am and parade through the town along Queens Street, Kings Street and up Broad Street to St. Georges Church, where a two minutes silence will be held at 11am, followed by wreath laying. The public are also welcome to attend the church service after the two minutes silence in St. Georges Church.

After the church service, the parade will go down Church Hill and the High Street, saluting the civic party outside the Post Office.

Remembrance Sunday is a day to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.
